Hurricane Florence

The CIC staff have reached out to the Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP) to inquire about any preparedness measures being taken for Hurricane Florence, which is expected to make landfall in the Carolinas tomorrow. The Bureau has not evacuated the facilities in these states and states that it "has a contingency plan in place." The staff also reached out to BOP and BOP contract facilities located in North Carolina and South Carolina. The facilities either did not share any information regarding preparedness or echoed the BOP central office response of having contingency plans in place. The BOP has uploaded a webpage where people may find updates on Hurricane Florence.

There were 388 DC residents incarcerated in North Carolina BOP facilities and contract facility Rivers Correctional Institution and 156 DC residents in South Carolina BOP facilities as of of August 1, 2018. The facilities in these states include:

  • Rivers Correctional Institution, NC
  • Federal Correctional Complex (FCC) Butner, NC
  • FCI Bennettsville, SC
  • FCI Edgefield, SC
  • FCI Estill, SC
  • FCI Williamsburg, SC

If you know of any incarcerated DC residents in the above facilities, and if they have reported any updated information to you about the BOP response to Hurricane Florence, please contact the CIC at 202-478-9211 or 202-445-7623.

Thank you.
