The District of Columbia Corrections Information Council (CIC) conducted an inspection of USP Big Sandy on August 29th and 30th, 2018. United States Penitentiary Big Sandy, also known as USP Big Sandy, is a high-security facility located in Inez, Kentucky, approximately 461 miles from DC. As of August 2019, there were 100 men convicted of DC Code felony offenses at USP Big Sandy.
The inspection report includes concerns expressed by DC inmates regarding physical abuse from staff and other inmates, frequent lockdowns, visitation, programming, and religious services. The BOP’s response to the 2018 inspection is included at the end of the report.
