Two-Thirds of DC Felons Serve Prison Sentences Outside the Region

Friday, August 9, 2019

The majority of DC inmates often serve their sentences hundreds of miles away due to the fact that Washington, DC has no prison. NBC 4 higlights this issue in a recent broadcast which explores the perils of having a loved one far away from home and the obstables some returning citizens face when coming home. Higher rates of receidivism have brought the issues of returning citizens to the forefront in the recent First Step Act, which will ensure people are prepared to come home from prison job-ready and have major incentives to pursue the life-changing classes that will help them succeed on the outside (S. 2795).
